- Pierre HUYGHE, "After UUmwelt"
Pierre HUYGHE, After UUmwelt 📍La Grande Halle, Fondation Luma, Arles ▪️ Installation by iDzia: LED screens, video server, sound, sensors Pierre HUYGHE, "After UUmwelt" Pierre Huyghe, an artist renowned for exploring the relationships between humans, nature, and technology, transformed the La Grande Halle at the Fondation Luma into a true sensory laboratory. His installation After UUmwelt immerses viewers in a universe where human and artificial imagination interact with biological and technological entities. Through this immersive experience, Huyghe confronts the audience with a world in constant evolution, populated by cells, viral forms, and biological and technological processes, blending to create a dynamic environment. The artwork takes its name from the concept of "umwelt," a biological term referring to the world as perceived by an organism — its unique sensory experience of the environment. By adding the prefix "U" to this term, Huyghe suggests an amplification of this perception, transformed and altered by technological and biological elements, offering a new and disorienting view of our surroundings. The installation highlights how human and non-human environments can be interconnected through biological and artificial systems. After UUmwelt deploys a series of interactive devices that actively engage the viewer's senses. LED screens, video servers, a specially designed sound system, and sensors act as dynamic interfaces that respond to movement and human interaction. The installation becomes a living space, an organism in itself, where the artist creates a dialogue between humans and machines, nature and technology. Visitors are invited to experience this environment as a fluid, transitional space where the boundaries between different forms of life and technology blur. Every element of the installation, whether biological or digital, contributes to this unique sensory experience, blurring the lines between the natural and the artificial. The entire setup creates a one-of-a-kind atmosphere, almost futuristic, where mutations are visible and tangible, offering a glimpse into another world, both fascinating and unsettling. This exhibition, presented from June 26, 2021, to February 9, 2022, prompted reflection on the evolving relationships between humans, technology, and life itself. Pierre Huyghe thus invites us to reconsider our perceptions and interactions with the world around us through an unprecedented immersive and multisensory experience. @luma_arles // @idzia_audiovisuel

P. STAFF, Conjunctions, 2021 📍Exhibition Prelude - La Mécanique Générale, Fondation Luma, Arles ▪️ iDzia Installation: LED screen, multichannel sound, lighting P. STAFF, "Conjunctions" P. Staff's Conjunctions installation, presented as part of the Prelude exhibition at the Fondation Luma, immerses the viewer in a deep reflection on the intensity of the relationship between two bodies, whether celestial or planetary, human or cyborg, living or undead. Through this work, P. Staff explores the concepts of contact and the transfer of energy through matter, thus questioning the boundary between the organic and the non-organic, the living and the non-living. This project is part of a broader reflection on bodily dynamics and the interactions between different forms of existence. Conjunctions challenges the viewer to think beyond typical physical relationships by inviting them to reconsider how we are interconnected with our environment. The work creates an immersive and sensory atmosphere where viewers are invited to engage with representations of bodies and matter in interaction. The LED screen, combined with a multichannel sound installation and a carefully crafted light setup, provides a richly sensory experience in which each visual and auditory element seems to converse with the others, creating an organic and vibrant whole. The concept behind Conjunctions offers a complex vision of the world, where the boundaries between the living and the non-living blur and transform. The projected images, coupled with a progressively dense and saturated sound environment, suggest invisible interconnections, exchanges of energy and matter, as if the work itself became a space of passage where elements intertwine and transform. In doing so, P. Staff invites viewers to reflect on their place in the world and their relationship with other forms of life, whether biological or technological. From June 26, 2021 to January 9, 2022@p___staff // @luma_arles // @idzia_audiovisuel Conjunctions is thus a poetic and philosophical exploration of invisible exchanges and the intimate relationships that bind us to the universe, in an innovative and captivating visual and auditory language. - Anri SALA, "If and Only If"
Anri SALA, If and Only If 📍The Tower, Luma Foundation, Arles ▪️ Installation iDzia : video projection cinemascope, sound Anri SALA, "If and Only If" If and Only If (2018) is an immersive work that invites the viewer into a poetic reflection on time, music, and nature, while offering a reinterpretation of an essential piece of classical repertoire. Inspired by Igor Stravinsky's Elegy for Solo Viola , the artist Anri Sala takes us on a singular journey, a visual and auditory metaphor of a subtle interaction between two seemingly opposing elements: the slow progress of a snail and the agility of the musician, embodied by the renowned violist Gérard Caussé. The cinemascope video projection transports us to a visual space where a snail, at an excruciatingly slow pace, crawls the entire length of the viola bow. This seemingly innocent movement gradually disrupts the delicate balance required by the musician’s performance. The sound, with its deep and emotional resonance, feeds off this improbable interaction between the animal and the instrument. The snail’s movement becomes a metaphor for the silent yet decisive influence that subtly disturbs the perfection needed in music, while also symbolizing slowness and patience in a world where such virtues are often overlooked. The piece takes the form of a monologue, yet the pursuit of a tactile interaction between the two distinct entities evokes a hidden dialogue, a fragile and intimate relationship between the elements. The fact that the snail’s movement interferes with the execution of Stravinsky's Elegy for Solo Viola creates an interaction that is silent but incredibly present, almost imperceptible—a subtle conversation between the artist and nature. Through If and Only If , Anri Sala encourages us to reconsider music as a dialogue—not only between the musician and the instrument but also between the artist and the environment in which they exist. The film beautifully illustrates the essence of Stravinsky's composition, where every note resonates with the surrounding space, and every sound, no matter how insignificant, alters the balance of the whole. Displayed at La Tour of the Luma Foundation, this work is a tribute to the fragility of creative balance and an invitation to reflect on the role of detail in artistic creation. A sensory experience that challenges the viewer to consider the power of the artistic gesture, however subtle it may be. #AnriSala #IfAndOnlyIf #Stravinsky #ArtExhibition #LumaFoundation #SoundAndVision #ContemporaryArt #GérardCaussé Read more From June, 26, 2021 to May, 01st, 2022 @luma_arles // @idzia_audiovisuel // @yamaha.audio // @epsonfrance // @meyersoundlabs
- Derek JARMAN, "Portraits dans le temps"
Derek JARMAN, Portrait dans le temps 📍Galerie des archives - The Tower, Luma Foundation, Arles ▪️ Installation iDzia : the video-projection, the sound Derek JARMAN, "Portraits dans le temps" Derek Jarman, a polymath known for his work as a filmmaker, painter, writer, and gardener, first picked up a Super 8 camera in the early 1970s. Over the next seven years, he created a substantial body of work, filming and editing a series of films that would become iconic. His Super 8 work is divided into three distinct periods, each with its own unique approach and identity. The first period is closely linked to his paintings from that time, exploring the visual interplay between his static art and moving images. The second period takes on a more theatrical and experimental tone, using costumed figures and layered images, pushing the boundaries of traditional cinema and visual art. The third period, perhaps the most poignant and emotionally resonant, consists of a series of intimate portraits of friends and lovers, captured with his portable camera. These portraits convey the fleeting nature of human connection and Jarman’s ability to capture the emotional essence of a moment. He used a combination of a slow shutter speed, a slightly wide-angle lens, and minimal editing within the camera itself to create an atmosphere of fragility and ephemerality, allowing the viewer to feel as though they are part of the intimate, quiet moments he filmed. The exhibition Portrait in Time , hosted at the Archives Gallery - La Tour of the Luma Foundation in Arles, invites the public to explore the intimate and fascinating world of this extraordinary filmmaker. Through a series of video projections and sound installations, the exhibition offers a new perspective on Jarman’s work, where cinema, painting, and music intersect harmoniously. The exhibition, open from June 26, 2021, to May 1, 2022, is a tribute to Derek Jarman’s legacy and his significant impact on contemporary art.
