Patti Smith & Soundwalk Collective at LUMA Arles: When Video and Light Become an Artistic Language

At LUMA Arles, CORRESPONDENCES, the exhibition by Patti Smith and Soundwalk Collective, invites visitors into a world where images, sound and poetry interact. Presented in the Grande Halle until 8 November 2026, this immersive installation explores the connections between nature, memory and human history, creating a distinctive sensory experience in which every element plays a part.

In this monumental space, images do more than illustrate a narrative. They engage with sound, accompany the text and contribute to a constantly evolving visual environment. This artistic approach presents a significant technical challenge: bringing every element together into a coherent whole while preserving the creative freedom and intentions of the artists.

A Monumental and immersive Installation in an Industrial Hall

The Grande Halle’s impressive scale offers exceptional creative possibilities, but also introduces specific technical constraints. In a vast industrial space, implementing an immersive audiovisual installation requires careful consideration of equipment positioning, rigging, projection angles and how images will be experienced by the audience.

For CORRESPONDENCES, the video setup features four giant suspended screens, supported by an additional rigging structure, alongside a fifth projector positioned at the back of the hall. These five projection points must be integrated into the architecture of the venue and work together to create a coherent visual experience.

Suspending the screens requires particular attention to the structure, its positioning and the integration of the entire installation within the existing space. Beyond technical feasibility, every decision must serve the artistic concept and allow the images to have their full impact.

Five Projectors, One Unified Visual Language

Using multiple projection surfaces is a central challenge of this installation. Each screen has its own place within the space, yet the images must be conceived as elements of a single composition. Video programming brings together the content displayed across the five projectors, ensuring consistency throughout the installation. The challenge is not simply to project several films simultaneously, but to create a unified visual language, with carefully managed sequences and connections between the different surfaces.

This approach becomes even more important when video interacts with lighting. Lighting sequences are programmed in collaboration with the artists to complement the imagery, emphasise transitions and shape the atmosphere of the hall as the work unfolds. Video and light thus become two components of the same stage language. Their coordination relies on precise programming, combined with a detailed understanding of the project’s rhythm, creative intentions and artistic sensibility.

Several Weeks of Artistic Collaboration and Technical Support

A project of this nature takes shape all along the installation itself.

Over several weeks, artistic collaboration brings creative intentions into dialogue with the technical possibilities of the venue. This involves understanding the artists’ expectations, anticipating projection requirements, defining the programming approach and progressively refining the setup so that it fully supports the work. This preparation phase is essential. It goes beyond the physical installation of equipment to focus on how images and light unfold throughout the space, interact with one another and shape the audience’s journey.

In an immersive project, the technology must be sufficiently well controlled to remain in the background, allowing the experience itself to take centre stage. The technical setup becomes a creative tool, serving the artistic vision rather than becoming an end in itself.

Technology in the Service of the Experience

With CORRESPONDENCES, Patti Smith and Soundwalk Collective bring together moving images, soundscapes and poetry in a work that explores memory, disappearance and the fragility of the world.

In this environment, the coherence of the audiovisual setup directly influences how the work is experienced. Screen positioning, image projection, video programming and lighting sequences work together to create an immersive environment in which every element has its place. Projects of this kind demonstrate the importance of dialogue between artistic creation and technical expertise. Behind the apparent simplicity of the visitor experience lies a process of design, programming and refinement, developed over time and closely aligned with the artists’ intentions.

At the Grande Halle of LUMA Arles, technology supports the creative process without overpowering it. It allows image, sound and light to come together, giving form to a distinctive artistic work.

CORRESPONDENCES, by Patti Smith and Soundwalk Collective, is on view at LUMA Arles until 8 November 2026.
