The Rhône Delta on Screen

Presented at the LUMA Foundation’s La Galerie Est from May 2026 to March 2027, Véréna Paravel’s work Delta immerses the audience in the ecosystem of the Rhône Delta. Through audio and visual recording techniques, the documentary film reveals the often-invisible lives of the species that inhabit the wetlands of the Camargue.

Véréna Paravel, Filmmaker and Anthropologist of the Sensible

Born in 1971 in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, Verena Paravel is an anthropologist and artist working in the fields of film, video, and photography. Her work is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and has been exhibited at the Tate, the Whitney Biennial, and documenta 14.

In collaboration with anthropologist Lucien Castaing-Taylor, she co-directed Leviathan (2012), which won the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes. Véréna Paravel was in residence at LUMA Arles from October to December 2025, where she collaborated closely with the Tour du Valat, a Camargue-based wetland research institute.

Listening to the Camargue

Delta is a commissioned film developed as part of the Cosmofonia research project led by Paravel. Using scientific and military recording equipment, the film makes frequencies inaudible to the human ear audible, such as the infrasonic vibrations of reeds, signals exchanged between species, and the seismic resonances of the mudflats. As the institution describes the work:

“It conceives of film as a medium of contact: a way to approach other ways of life without reducing them to human categories.” (LUMA Arles - 2026)
