"Manger Les Images": Audiovisual Technology at the Mucem Exhibition
Presented at the Mucem in Marseille, the exhibition "Manger Les Images" offers a unique exploration of our relationship with images, from Antiquity to contemporary society. Through more than 430 works and objects, it examines the symbolic, cultural and sensory dimensions of incorporating images, and the ways in which they have shaped different eras and civilisations.
Paintings, sculptures, photographs, films, objects and installations come together in a rich and varied exhibition, where audiovisual elements play an essential role. For this project, iDzia was responsible for installing all the audiovisual equipment, including video projection systems, monitors and sound reinforcement.
Audiovisual Installations Supporting the Exhibition Design
In an exhibition of this scale, audiovisual technology is far more than an addition to the artworks on display. It plays an integral part in shaping the visitor journey and conveying the exhibition's artistic and curatorial vision. Video projections bring filmed content and visual creations into the exhibition, enriching the collections. Monitors are integrated into different sections of the visitor journey to display films, archival material and testimonies. Sound reinforcement complements the spaces and content requiring a dedicated audio environment.
Each installation needs to be carefully positioned within the exhibition design, taking into account the layout, visitor circulation and proximity to other works. The objective is to ensure that every piece of content is displayed appropriately, while maintaining the overall coherence of the exhibition and visitor comfort.
An Audiovisual Installation Designed as a Whole
Installing all the equipment requires careful preparation and coordination. The various audiovisual systems must be integrated into the exhibition design, respect the specific constraints of each space and meet the operational requirements of an exhibition open to the public over several months. Projectors, screens, monitors, sound systems and associated equipment are deployed according to the needs of each section of the exhibition. The diversity of the content calls for tailored solutions, both in terms of video display and sound reproduction.
This work requires particular attention to equipment positioning, connections, adjustments and testing. Beyond simply installing and commissioning the equipment, the aim is to ensure that every system operates reliably and contributes naturally to the visitor experience.
Working in Collaboration with the Mucem Teams
The project was carried out in close collaboration with the museum's teams, particularly during the installation phase and the integration of audiovisual equipment into the exhibition design.
We would like to extend our special thanks to the Mucem's exhibition design team for the quality of the exchanges and their collaboration throughout the installation process. This collaboration also continued during the two exhibition openings, held on 27 October and 1 November, for which the Mucem's events team also entrusted us with the technical production.
iDzia, Technical Partner for Museums and Cultural Venues
Based in Arles, iDzia supports museums, cultural venues and institutions in designing and implementing audiovisual installations tailored to their projects.
Video projection, monitor displays, sound reinforcement and technical integration: every installation requires a combination of equipment expertise, an understanding of the content and respect for the specific constraints of exhibition spaces.
With "Manger Les Images", this project once again demonstrates the important role audiovisual technology plays in showcasing collections and shaping the visitor experience.
Thank you to the Mucem teams for their trust and for this collaboration.
