On the occasion of its 21st edition, the Escales du Cargo festival once again stands out as one of the most essential musical events in the south of France. Every summer, the festival takes place in Arles, in the majestic setting of the Roman Theatre, a historic venue that offers both unique acoustics and atmosphere. Organized by the passionate team of the Cargo de Nuit, Arles’ iconic concert hall, the event has, for over two decades, attracted a diverse audience of music lovers, eager to discover both international headliners and rising talents. As a true showcase of contemporary music, Les Escales du Cargo skillfully blends prestigious names with new voices, thus contributing to the cultural influence of the region.
This year, the opening night was entrusted to Air, the pioneering French electro-pop duo. Formed by Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel, Air French Band made their mark in the late 1990s as ambassadors of the French Touch movement, with cult albums such as Moon Safari and the soundtrack for The Virgin Suicides, directed by Sofia Coppola. Their long-awaited return to the stage, enhanced by stunning visuals and light design, transported the audience into an immersive experience, balancing nostalgia with modernity.
The following evening, it was British singer Jorja Smith who took over the stage. First brought to international attention with her debut album Lost & Found, she has been praised for her warm yet powerful voice and now embodies a new generation of soul and R&B. With deeply personal and socially conscious lyrics, combined with a magnetic stage presence, she captivated the Roman Theatre audience. Her concert was filled with both emotion and groove, cementing her reputation as one of the brightest stars of today’s music scene.
Finally, the third night welcomed a living legend: Nick Cave, in partnership with PIAS. A dark poet, an intense performer, and an essential figure of rock since the 1980s, the Australian artist has left his mark on several generations with his band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. His universe—where rock, blues, and literature intertwine—resonates powerfully within the ancient theatre of Arles. Each of Nick Cave’s performances is an intense, almost mystical experience, where music becomes an inner journey.
As it celebrates its 30th anniversary, the Cargo de Nuit reaffirms its central role in Arles’ cultural life. Born in the 1990s, this intimate venue has always combined closeness with artistic excellence. The Escales du Cargo festival is the natural extension of this vision—a highlight where history, music, and emotion meet.
