Presented at the LUMA Foundation in the Mécanique Générale space from July 2025 to January 2026, Ho Tzu Nyen’s video installation Spectral Day and Strange Tales offers an immersive experience that blends imagery, sound, and contemporary storytelling.
An Artist at the Intersection of Film, History, and Mythology
Ho Tzu Nyen, born in Singapore in 1976, is a contemporary artist known for his video installations and experimental films. A leading figure in hybrid and digital art, his work draws on a wide range of cultural references from Southeast Asia, theater, film, and philosophy.
His artistic practice centers on the construction of narratives and how they influence our perception of history. Consequently, through the use of archives, animation, and digital technologies, he creates hybrid worlds where reality and fiction become inseparable.
Evolving Narratives in Ho Tzu Nyen’s Installation
Spectral Day and Strange Tales brings together five multimedia installations spanning more than a decade of creative work. The collection explores the construction of historical, cultural, and personal narratives through complex audiovisual devices. These works cover:
“Topics ranging from pre-colonial myths to episodes of colonization, from contemporary geopolitical dynamics to representations of a hybrid and unstable present” (LUMA Foundation, 2025).
At the heart of the exhibition, the Singaporean artist’s work employs advanced technologies such as algorithmic editing, video archives, animation, and artificial intelligence. In that respect, the main installation, Phantoms of Endless Day, recombines materials from an unfinished film.
Thus, Spectral Day and Strange Tales combines art and digital technologies to give rise to new forms of storytelling.
